I'd say that depends on the car and how many passengers there are. If you're 5 people to split the gas that's only $100/person. I don't know much about flight prices in the US, but that sounds cheaper than a plane ticket to me.

Also consider that while taking the car might be cheaper, it eats up a lot of time that might be better spent at your destination..
