I would like to see some of the more remote, and less tourist driven places in Africa without risking exposure to too many diseases.
Are there tours that take travelers away from locations that cater to Western tastes? |

There are tons of tours like this in Africa, and if you are heading to Africa to volunteer or do aid work you can expect to be taken to areas like this. I would think the best way to 'safely' explore Africa would be to be paired up with a guide or become part of a missions trip.

You definetely need a guide! You want somebody that knows the area and is aware of the dangers. Ask your doctor about getting vaccines before you go. There are illnesses that can be prevented. Aways watch the water you are drinking and bring good mosquito repellents!
