As a woman traveling alone in Africa, will I be expected to adhere to Muslim law when shopping on my own, or are most areas tolerant of women from other countries, and their appearance?

I am sure that if you are traveling to a tourist destination the locals will be more accommodating than if you visit an area more off the beaten path. Is there a particular area in Africa you are referencing when you ask your question?
