Default Cuisine

What are some indigenous foods to Thailand? What are some things that would be considered a must eat for a tourist?

I'd think that the food is similar to what's served in Thai restaurants all over the world.. Noodles/rice, spicy sauces and vegetables/meat. Probably a lot more to it though

One way I think you could really get a feel for the local cuisine would be to go to one of the outdoor markets and buy from he vendors. I would want to make sure I was with a local though... while I want to try new things, I am not a big fan of eating bugs!

Haha, indeed. I've heard that the "meat on a stick" things you can buy in China (and maybe other parts of Asia) can be just about any kind of "meat". Bugs, rats, you name it.

Me & my girlfriend are actually hooked on a Thai place in our town right now. We pick up food there at least once/week. I usually order the spiciest dish they've got.. Sometimes it's so spicy my eyes start to tear.. mmm tasty!

One of my friend visited this place and was telling that the Thai food that we eat out side Thailand is different and the one we get there itself is very typical and may we don't have taste for that. He is big fan of Thai food otherwise, but in Thailand he starved.

I have heard that some of the food might be a bit dangerous, especially what is sold at the open markets.

This probably stems from the way the food is handled after it has been cooked.

It is very typical for ethnic food to be different in the country of origin. When imported, cuisine adjusts to the country it's in. What we know here in America as Chinese, Italian, etc. is only the Americanized version.

Some food is indeed dangerous, but I think you'll mostly find the usual Thai food that is served in Thai restaurants.

For me, one of the best sides of traveling is going on a culinary adventure.
In Thailand you do not want to miss their specialties such as jasmine rice, fried rice, varieties of soups, seafoods with curry fried bananas, thai iced tea and giant fried water bugs.... well maybe you want to skip this specialty..
