Default Increasing Airfare

With gas prices per barrel going down, when do you think this is going to translate to a decrease in airfare?? I just made a trip from LAX to JFK a few weeks ago and it cost me more than $400 for a round-trip ticket, in coach, with one stop each way. When will it end?!

Good question. At least here in Europe we have sort of the opposite situation. There are companies like RyanAir that have such low prices that you wonder how they can even profit from it. For example flying from London to Paris might cost something like $70, if you book in advance. Of course those flights are of the lowest possible standard, but I don't see how they can save enough to make up for the gas prices.

I think in a long time perspective though we will see airfare prices going way up, at least until they can run the airplanes on alternative fuel.

I'd like to know when too. You know I don't think they will. It's crazy we see prices going up but rarely coming down. What I think is crazy is now the airlines are charging us extra for bags checked. You can have 1 carry-on and then are charged for the extra bags. I think it's crazy! I can see if you have excessive bags- but 1 extra? Come on.

I think almost all things in this world are increasing in price especially our basic needs. I'm very much affected of the increase of airfare because I'm a traveller. Hope the goverment will do something about it. But no matter waht happened, I'll still travel either by sea or land.

Family recently visited us and booked a last minute flight thinking it would be cheaper, as it usually is, but the cost of the flights, baggage and taxes was far more expensive than it was just a few weeks before.

Yep sometimes it's a lot cheaper to book the flight a long time before the trip. I think the best bet is to check prices as soon as you've decided on taking the trip - if they're cheap enough then I'd say just go ahead and book the flight.

I don't think it will ever end. Companies see that consumers are willing to pay more, and they're not gonna lower the prices.

I think this is definitely true, but its not just very often I have the luxury of doing this - my life is pretty much made up of last minute trips!

Right now I do not think the airlines have a choose, but for all those years before when they charged what ever they wanted they should just eat that right now and give us a break.

It's not going to end unless the economy suddenly revitalizes. People are finally making hard choices. Trips across the US are going to be one of the casualities I think.

Another thing they do is make you pay for your food on board, and what they charge for a can of pop is ridiculous. Yeah, prices are climbing up and up, I agree that it is unlikely to change for the better.

prices for airlines vary for a number of reasons - surprisingly including the airports you're flying into and out of. i know that even though i live about 15 minutes from washington national i go to baltimore when i'm flying out because it's a whole lot less expensive

I have noticed this too, that's why I always check the "All Airports" box when I am looking for airline tickets. Price difference can be quite significant depending on what airport you fly in or out of.

Yes, airline tickets vary greatly. I saw a documentary where on the same flight one person paid like $200 where the other paid $800. It all depends on when you book, where you book from, how you book and if you book. Last minute deals were once though of being cheap but now it seems like you save more by booking in advance.

My recipe for a cheap ticket is doing all on-line. Booking at least one month in advance, looking at the best deal, best time etc and using coupon codes.

There are so many airlines and they have tough competetion between them, there are so many offers at times that we do get the tickets at lower prices.Comparitively the prices are rising every day and people do compaint a lot regarding this but you see most of the times all airlines are full, people do travel and are ready to spend.

It's a tough time to be in the airline business simply because someone has to pay for the higher cost of fuel. The airlines want to make money so they'll pass the cost on to the consumer, but they also have to be careful because if they pass along too much of the cost, they'll lose flyers and end up out of business. As for when it will end, I think this is just the beginning and things will get worst.
