Flying with Dogs

Has anyone ever flown with their dog in cargo? This whole idea really freaks me out, which is why we drive. Anyone have any experience doing this, should I be worried?

Flying with your dog is pretty safe, but if this freaks you out maybe you should just leave the dog home and have someone feed him.

Never and I wouldn't consider it, either. I've heard too many horror stories, and I'm not about to consciously put my baby at risk that way. Nope, not for me.

I haven't traveled very far with my pets.We do take our pets along, but only when we are moving in our car.If we are moving out for a number of days and far off destinations, then the pets are left at home with some attendent.

I know many people who do this...crate their pets and then fly them around. I wouldn't though. I'd either pay for a ticket for them to be right with me or else leave them at home or drive. I just don't like the thought and it would seem awfully traumatizing!!

Yeah I def. wouldn't do that. I'd spend the whole flight worrying..

I would not do this unless I absolutely had no other choice - like moving permantently to some place you can only fly to. I would be too worried about my pets in cargo.

Agree, do it only if necessary. I have flown with my Pesian cat a lot. She went also on a 9 hour flight from Germany to the US. In my experience flying is very safe for our pets. There are yes a few horror stories but each day thousands are flown safely. Before flying I contacted several breeders and they all said they would be out of business if flying cats and dogs would not be safe.

Most airlines are very careful, their personnel are specially trained to handle pets, they load pets last and unload them first, plus the airlines have embargo rules that prohibit flying your pet if the temperatures of the year are too hot or too cold. Almost every flight has cats or dogs on board.

I don't like to travel with my dog simply because he doesn't like it. He preferes our place anytime, so I usually get friends or family to keep an eye on him.

I do kind of wish he'd come with me though, but being such a big dog, getting him on the plane is really uncomfortable for him, and he gets restless.

A friend of mine had flown her two cats from Europe to the US. Somehow, she'd managed to get permission to have them in the plane next to her, not in cargo - huge difference. She'd also given them sleeping pills, so they slept through most of the flight.

I don't like flying with dogs in the cargo, it will just cause trauma to the dog.

I've seen dogs taken on plains many times
I wonder how this lady managed to get them to let take her miniature poodle actually inside the plane, in a little carry-on
