No, not really. I actually didnt' fly until I was an adult. It was funny, though, because on our first flight, it was kinda turbulent. We sang. lol It was really funny, but it got us through.

I don't have a fear of flying. It's the landing that makes me a little nervous. There was one time I was flying from Denver to Salt Lake and there happened to be a snow storm in Salt Lake. As we were descending, the plane dropped suddenly because of turbulence. It scared the daylights out of me. I later learned from the news that a plane that landed after mine had dropped 500 feet and there were enough injuries and they were severe enough that ambulances were waiting when the plane landed.

I am not exactly afraid of flights, but it is not a very pleasant affair either. When I come out of the plane there is a sigh of relief. But I tell you my partner he is too scared of flying. He will, at first place, opt for train or road, when air travel is the only option left, he will drop the idea of traveling. When he boards a plane clings on to me and I have to keep him occupied through out the journey.

I actually like it. My two favorite parts are the takeoff, when you get pushed back into your seat because of the acceleration.. And when you're just about to land and look out the window over the city you're arriving in (if you have a window seat).

My first flying experience took place when I was still a kid, so I did not have any fears, it was all fun. I actually loved those "bumps" and wondered why adults acted so scared of them.
I guess having or not having fear of flying has a lot to do with your first flight; mine went well, I enjoyed it, so I do not fear. |

The takeoff may be fun unless you suddenly realize that it was because the pilot did as an evasive maneuver. It happened one time when my plane was descending into the airport in Detroit when suddenly the pilot pulled up hard because of a plan that had not cleared the runway. I guess it really wasn't a takeoff, but talk about scary.

I was ok with it until I hit some pretty severe turbulence back in March of 2002.
The plane felt pretty out of control, suddenly dropping altitute, regaining it and moving side to side. Some people got motion sick. Other were panicky and called the stewards but the captain had to announce that they could not help because it was too dangerous to get up and walk about. I looked out the window and the wings were literally flapping up and down, this made me almost sick to my stomach so I closed the window, praying it would soon end. I think it was clear air turbulence because there were no clouds, but just a bit of fog. To make things worse the lights started flickering until it was all dark for a few minutes. This lasted for about 45 minutes, the captain said it stopped because we met thinner air near the coast. Upon stepping out the plane I saw all stewards with messy hair, lol. But boy, it was a rough ride! Since then every time I feel bumps coming it's like if I re-live that day. I was told this type of turbulence is pretty rare, so I hope this was just a once of a lifetime event. |

I wished I could avoid it all together, but at some point you must over come it if you have loved ones across the ocean. This is why I have to over come it, however, it gets easier as you fight it. Avoidance for me just made the fear much bigger and more overwhelming.

If you are afraid and wish to go a pharmaceutical route, there are meds that your doctor can give you to make flying more comfortable. Hypnosis and meditation can also help too.

I don't have a fear of flying specifically.
I did have a couple of close calls when it got pretty scary. Once, they had to turn the plane around because there was a crack in the door. A different time, it was an ugly storm, and we were shaking like crazy. I guess they did not have enough altitude at the time. |
