Default Learning a foreign language

If you plan to travel to another culture that doesn't speak your language do you make any attempts to learn the language even if it's at a basic level? I think most people would be appreciative of travelers who attempted this.

I think it is really important to at least make some effort to try to communicate with people in their native language. No one will ever be angry or disrespected if you try.

It's a plus factor if you know how to speak different languages. If you will visit Japan, most of them will not speak English to you even if they know how to speak. For Japanese people, you will be the one to adjust because you're in their motherland.

Shinningstar, my wife tells me the same is true of France. By learning the language of the country you plan to visit, you are showing respect to the people and culture you are visiting.

I would certainly try. There are several online travel guides or ones you can purchase that have a lot of the basics. Most places will be nice to you.

I took french in high school.

The teacher was telling us how french residents look down at visitors that do not speak the language.

As a resident of the U.S. that seems weird and frankly kind of rude.

Here, there are non-english speakers at every corner!
