Default Extra Bag Fees

During my most recent flying experience I was upset to find out that I was charged $25 for each bag I needed to place under the plane - which was only ONE! Are all airlines starting to charge for bags now?

You mean they charge for a SINGLE bag, not "extra bags" or whatever? That's outrageous, but I guess they have to pull stuff like that to make up for the rising fuel costs and falling profits.

Yea, it's a new fee. They're charging for any bag you might have, if it's going under the plane.

This fee was for a single bag - not only that - it was ONE bag between BOTH my husband and I!! I just do not know where they get off charging for this stuff... Then after we were charged for our bags all we got to eat on the plane was one cup of soda, not even the whole can, and we flew all the way across the US. It was a pretty miserable experience indeed.

It seems that the budget airlines are adding more and more extras into the cost of a flight, making them just as expensive as the seeminlgy more expensive airlines. The best thing to do is check the small print before booking.

That seems a bit overboard charging for one bag. I could understand it if someone had like 5 bags or something.

I just read the news last month that major airlines charged for $15 for the first checked bag and then $25 for the second bag. They even charge for $100/bag for the following third, fourth etc.. bags.

It's growing in scope, yes. They are even starting to charge for pillows now. I think a few airlines are going to end up calling it quits. They can't survive in this economy and the more they penny pitch the travelers, the more folks are gonna stay home.

Yep I agree some airlines will probably not survive much longer. Let's just hope they won't start cutting down on safety.. I don't want to end up in a plane crash just because they didn't spend enough on maintenance. But let's hope noone is that reckless..

It's getting to be a standard now a days. They used to only charge if you had extra luggage or if it was overweight, but now they're charging if you bring any luggage at all unless it's a carry on. Have to pack light and tight to fit it into a small enough bag to carry on the plane.

How long ago did you travel? I flew in July 2008, and I was not charged per bag... This must be something very, very new. (I don't like it, nedless to say!)

it differs from one airline to the next. airtran, for example, gives you one bag free then has you pay 25 per for each additional. there are airlines though that don't even give you that one bag included in your ticket price

I flew in the beginning of August on US Airways (yuck, I know, but it was the only reasonably priced one). I have since traveled on Continental and they did not charge me, so apparently its only certain carriers.

I have done some checking, and it looks like US Air and American Airlines are doing this. I am sure others will follow, so it's a good idea to look up an airline's current luggage policies before ordering tickets.

either that's a scam or they really have to charge it to make some profit.unfortunately some air lines do charge extra even for one bag.

It seems that others are starting to follow suit here in the US - how is it abroad??

My parents flew from Italy to the the States this summer and they were not charged for the luggage put under. However, it may differ from one company and the other as here in the States. They are also thinking of charging over weight people now so I am not surprised that they are looking for new ways to save money.

Did you notice there are always less and less magazines in the pocket of the seat in front of you? Soon I would not be suprised if they would take away the magazines and just keep the barf bag there!

If the passangers are charged for one single bag that is not just fair deal.I think the reduced fare offers are the reason behind such charges, the airlines now have to get profit by right or wrong means. But the last time we traveled there was nothing like this, may be it will be regular feature now onwards.
