We always head back east (from California) for the holidays - do you think it will be more economical and cheaper for us to fly or drive when the time comes? We drove last year and spent about $500 in gas...

I'd say that depends on the car and how many passengers there are. If you're 5 people to split the gas that's only $100/person. I don't know much about flight prices in the US, but that sounds cheaper than a plane ticket to me.
Also consider that while taking the car might be cheaper, it eats up a lot of time that might be better spent at your destination.. |

I think flying is cheaper. It's faster, but less fun. With a car you'll get there slower, but have more fun.

You have to calculate gas versus plane fare for each member of your family. Maybe you can get a deal. Personally, I'd stay home.

Is that $500 round trip? How many of you go? I'd say that's most likely less expensive than buying round trip plane tickets for everyone, BUT....when you drive you have other expenses like food and such on the road. Sometimes you can check for clearances (I know it sounds weird but they do have them) on air fares and it may work out less in the long run. All I can say is check around and compare. Flying gets you there faster so you have more time at your destination, but driving may be the more economical way to go.

I have found it cheaper to fly than driving. When you add fuel costs, highway tolls, meals, hotels, water/ snacks from vending machines the costs really add up. Plus there is nothing like arriving relaxed to your destination, a couple of hours versus 6-8 hours of driving.
However, to really save, the airline tickets should be bought online through special deals and using good coupon codes. Also consider where you are going, some airlines have very good deals in certain areas but not much in others. |
