Default Renting a Car Abroad

When you rent a car in another country what documents are you required to have in order to rent? Do you need to purchase insurance in that country? Do you need to take any kind of test?

Probably depends on the country. I think you almost always have the option of getting various kinds of insurance when renting the car. I'm going to rent a car in the US ("another country" to me) in October, and I know I'll be buying all the insurance I can get. Might as well be on the safe side Don't think I need any documents besides my drivers license and passport.. At least I hope so

I think primarily you'll have to get an international driver's license and they're not difficult to get and you don't have to take a test to get one either. When my daughter and her friend went to Italy this year, her friend got his international license with no trouble at all so he drove while they were there. I'm not sure on the insurance, but I don't remember her saying anything about insurance at all so maybe the car rental company carries that.

It really does depend on the country. You will definately need your drivers licence - all the parts, and your passport of course. Other than that I would check with a hire company first, or indeed your travel agent.

I never even considered the possibility of needing an international driver's license, but that makes sense. I wonder how much it would cost to get that?
