Default Sharks?

Do you worry about sharks in the ocean when you have your beach vacations? I never used to, but then I watched some scary documentaries... I guess that's why some people travel to the ocean but never actually swim in it, opting for pools instead.

I don't go to shark areas. I love the ocean, but I don't tempt it. I stay pretty much on the beach or very close to the shore.

Me too! I'm not an ocean swimmer as I don't really like the waves and such. I'll wade in it up to my knees or whatever, but that's the extent of my ocean swimming. It's not because of sharks though, I hadn't given that much thought! LOL! Probably will now though!!

I swim in the Pacific Ocean, almost every day, and I can not say I worry about sharks. The chance of you being bitten/attacked by a shark are less than winning the lotto.

It is really scary, there are so many cases where there had been shark attacks. I think the beaches where there is threat of sharks should be well cordened off and gaurded.

Just out of curiosity, which part of the Pacific do you swim in? I'm originally from San Francisco and I'd see people swimming the chili waters and wondered how they could do it. There are sharks in the San Francisco bay, but they're limited to the smaller tiger sharks.

I am not a good swimmer, so I stay close to shore. But if I knew how to swim better I would certainly go. Shark attacks are over rated by the news just as airplane crashes or dogs attacking, just one of those things that make news just because they do not happen that often but yet attract people's attention.

Maybe shark attacks are overrated... and maybe the chances of being attacked are slimmer than winning the lotto... yet it happens. I saw a photo of a young surfer who'd lost an arm and both legs. It scared me.

I stay close to the shore too. I'm not crazy-- lol... the latest scare on the beaches this year was jellyfish. That was a scare- they are close to shore.

Not at all if we worried about everything that can harm us then we would never go anywhere or do anything.

I think shark attacks are overrated as long as you are not attacked. The moment you are attacked, then the odds of an attack have just jumped to 100%. I seen pictures of sharks swimming in shallow water so you don't have to go very far off shore to run into a shark.

Here in Florida they do have shark attacks. But you usually know from the news what beaches to be careful at. The attacks are very rare and yes they can and do happen in shallow water. Also the jelly fish sting you, the sting rays sting you. I am very careful when I go in the water. I live on the west coast so we are on the gulf of mexico. If you stay close to shore you can see to the bottom but if you go out farther you can`t.

I think it's good idea to post here some of the most shark-infested beaches.
I've been in Bolinas Beach but I don't have any idea that there are sharks in the beaches.

1. Kosi Bay, South Africa
2. Brisbane, Australia
3. Bolinas Beach, Northern California
4. New Smyrna Beach, Florida
5. Kahana, West Maui

I remember swimming with lots of jellyfish in the water when I was a kid... I just did not know they were dangerous! I knew they could sting you if you touch them on the wrong side, but somehow I didn't worry about that.

that is scary indeed.
can you imagine?

the crazy, unpredictable, unstoppable waves are just as scary.

I too prefer swimming pools.
I am a great swimmer, but an angry see can kill all the Phelps' in the world...

Yes, I would not swim far from shore. I actually like waves, but they can draw you farther into the sea if you are not careful, so you never let your guard down.

true, very true

if you wander to far, it can be very difficult to get back to shore.

If the waves are high, you have to swim sideways in order to make it to shore!!!

Did you know that?
