Long flight to Australia

How long is the actual flight to Australia? I remember I had a cousin that flew from JFK to Australia and she had all sorts of books and cross world puzzles to kill time.

I think a buddy of mine was saying over 20 hours from the state.
Because you have to fly to Europe first.

I may be wrong though.
