Default Places one should avoid.

Sometimes there are notorious places, which are of tourist attraction but are hub of criminal activities. Such places one should avoid, tourists are targeted and can land in big trouble.Isn't it?

I've heard horrific stories about inland Mexico, away from the resorts.
Not safe at all.

Lots of countries such as Jamaica, Tunisia and Mexico are great holiday destinations, but holiday makers are warned not to stray away from the resorts. I think foreigners do make easy targets for petty crime.

"away from the resorts" is the key phrase here, I think.

You're fine as long as you stay inside the resort.
Stepping outside and visiting the country on your own - that can be dangerous.

There are places around Thailand where crime rate is on higher side. Lot of girls are reported missing every year. There are lot of crimes against the tourists who try to get friendly with the locals.

sanju, Eastern Europe is also known for 'missing girls' problems.
I would not take my family on vacation to face those kinds of conditions.

I have some friends who regularly go to a resort in Mexico. I can't think of the name of it though, but once they did go and rented a car to take them around to other various places. The car didn't make it at all and they had to find help. It was a scary situation for them!!!
