Leaving your pets when you travel

I am on a short vacation right now, and as I packed my suitcases yesterday, my poor cats had gotten all upset. They know what suitcases mean - every time I get those things out, I leave. Do you pets know it when you are leaving?

I don't like to bring my pets along with me everytime I travel.
