Learning Portuguese

How similar is Portuguese to Spanish? Would someone who understands Spanish be able to understand people in Brazil?

It looks like most of the grammar and words are similar, but Portuguese may be a bit more challenging to learn. It seems like the Portuguese have not much trouble speaking and learning spanish, but the Spanish may encounter some difficulties.

Spanish and portuguese are very similar, but I think that is where it ends. Some of the basics are there, but it is altogether a different language.

I guess I should have went ahead and learned Portuguese first then!

They can usually figure it out, yes, but there are huge differences in inflection and how the languages are spoken.

they sound pretty similar at first, but I am sure there are major differences.
are there differences in the written language as well as the spoken language?
