What time of the year does Carnival take place in Brazil? How long should someone plan to stay if they want to get the full experience?

I thought it would be before lent, much like Mardi Gras, since the goal of Carnival is the same as that of Mardi Gras.

I have read that it starts 4 days before Ash Wednesday. Aren't there several different Carnivals though? One in Rio De Janeiro, another in Bahia, I believe; not sure where else.

I had no idea there were so many Carnival parties to choose from - maybe I will be ambitious and plan to hit all of them

M0st of them are good. i have been to a few and they all had great food, awesome music, and we all had a really, really good time.

The Great Rio Carnival is the best in the world. Lots of fun to be had there, I recommend it to anyone.
