Default Driving Through South America

Is it relatively safe for a non-South American resident to rent a car and travel through the different South American countries?

I don't think I could be so brave as to drive through South America. Simply the navigation would terrify me!! LOL! Nope, if ever I were to travel there I'd need a guide from someplace with an excellent reputation!!

It's dangerous. Bad roads, bandits and drug dealers make going alone an impossible task. Be careful.

I agree, go with an organized tour, skip the driving part especially by yourself. I am sure there are areas that you do not want to drive through by yourself and what if you get lost? Pretty scary, in my opinion. Use caution, dress like the locals and stay alert!

Here are more tips:

I don't know what the rental restrictions are.

In Europe, before the EU unification, rental companies had strict restrictions for certain countries: I tried to drive through Eastern Europe, and many countries were NOT on the list.

Is there a similar restriction maybe in South America?
