Lesbos, Greece, also often called Lesvos, is an island that has freely opened its doors to tourism. There are many things that draw people to this island with the tropical climate, thermal springs, quaint villages and exotic beaches being just a few of the things that make this part of Greece so unique. Perhaps two of the things it’s most famous for however are the fabulous ouzo that comes from this part of the world and for being the setting of the birth of the female poet, Sappho. There are so many wonderful things about Lesbos you’ll have trouble deciding which was your favorite part!
AreasAlthough there are no distinctive regions of Lesbos, there are many cities on the island and some are more suitable for tourists than others. However, this does not mean that you shouldn’t explore the entire island - some of the best parts are hidden places where there are no resorts or gift shops. The area of Petra is becoming one of the island’s best-known tourist destinations and it is here that you can find the best of both worlds. Tourists line up along the beach soaking up the rays and surf but you can easily wander through the back streets to get a truly Greek feeling. Mytilini and Molyvos are the other two major tourist destinations and it is here that you will find resorts, fine dining, and many different shopping opportunities. The other cities that comprise the rest of the island are wonderful for exploring and still hold many attractions for tourists although they may not be as numerous as other areas.
WeatherThe weather in Lesbos rarely dips below 15 degrees Celsius and then it is only during the months of October to March when the island also experiences the majority of its yearly rainfall. The summer months average a temperature of approximately 27 degrees Celsius. During these months, there is very little rain. Although it can become quite warm in Lesbos, there are always the wonderful breezes coming off the water that provide some relief from the heat.
Getting ThereVisitors to Lesbos generally fly into the Oddysseas Elytis Airport. The airport is located in the far southeastern corner of the island and is approximately eight kilometers from the town of Mytilini. There are also opportunities to come to the island from the mainland or from the other islands by ship.
If you have some time and want some of the best views that this planet has to offer, taking a ferry could be a wonderful way to see this part of the world. The ferry ride lasts approximately eleven hours and you can either travel on one of these going first-class or third-class. The first-class trips are more expensive but are worth it as many visitors have been displeased with the condition of some of the areas of third-class on these ships.
Getting AroundTaxis are also available just about anywhere and visitors generally find them to be friendly and honest although they may drive a little faster and recklessly than you are used to so be prepared if you choose to travel this way. Most of the taxis in Mytilini are metered however if you travel outside of the city using a taxi, they mostly have fixed rates as they are generally travelling a longer distance. Renting a car is always a good choice for having the freedom to go wherever you want to go for a reasonable price. Auto Moto is the largest car rental agency in Lesbos and has a counter set up at the harbour and the airport.
There are buses that travel throughout the entire island with the main station being in Mytilini. Bus tickets can be purchased just about anywhere including delis and coffee shops. If you find schedules and stop locations confusing, you can call the station in Mytilini to clear up any details.
If you choose to mostly walk during your stay, there are many hiking trails designed just for this purpose. Maps of the trails are available at just about any tourist office in Lesbos.
Sights & ActivitiesThere's no doubt that you'll want to try some of this island's famous ouzo as people who have tried it have admitted that there is no ouzo until you've tried Lesbos' ouzo. This museum is not only the perfect place to pick up a bottle of real authentic Greek ouzo but also to learn how it's made. The process is quite fascinating and you'll find out all about the magic ingredient of this fine liquor - anais, which the island has in abundance.
There is so much to do in this small island town that you really should spend at least one day here if not two. The beach of Petra is one of the largest on the island and lies just on the coast of Asia Minor. The beach is well organized with chairs and lounges arranged so that you may sit back and relax the beautiful sunset or simply bask in the sun and splash in the waves! Petra is also a tourist town, so there are many villas and resorts for you to stay and being one of the more inexpensive areas, you can stay high-class for lower-class prices!
If you find other places you'd rather visit on the island and don't want to stay overnight in Petra, at least visit for this magnificent rock. The rock is forty meters high and has baffled geologists for decades. There are many theories as to how this rock has been formed and what its origin is but no one knows the answer. Visit here and maybe you can unlock one of the world's mysteries while on your vacation!
You can see this stunning fortress from the port as you pull into Molyvos. This medieval castle was built in the thirteenth century and every road in Molyvos leads to it. Here you can find history about the king that lived there as well as how palace life was like centuries ago.
This beach is one of the favorites on Lesbos island mainly because it is one of the few that aren't crowded yet still hold the sandy beaches and the spectacular waves! Be prepared however. The cost of enjoying this beach is that space is pay-per-use.
In the small town of Efthalou lies the spectacular hot springs. Not only are these hot springs a wonderful way to relax and feel the peacefulness of the island but the water is also said to have healing powers and one can go to cure just about any ailment.
