It’s amazing that with all of the tourism that this city sees that the buildings and roads have kept their historical integrity but it’s true. The colors of the villages and the richness of the landscape are enough to interest anyone and the City of Rhodes has maintained its medieval look and feel for centuries. For those that aren’t the slightest bit interested in buildings, villages, or landscapes though there are the soft, sandy beaches that are impossible to turn down.

Areas

Rhodes Old Town

Rhodes can be broken up into four main areas. Rhodes Old Town is still enclosed by its medieval wall and the historical look and feel extends far beyond this wall once inside. Here you can walk around the old town and gaze up at the beautiful architecture.

Rhodes New Town

Waterfront

The waterfront is also within the boundaries of the New Town however, the three areas here are considered a different area of the city. These three areas are the Commercial Harbor, the Mandhraki Harbor, and Elli Beach.

Acropolis of Rhodes

The Acropolis of Rhodes is the fourth and final area and it is here that you can walk around the ruins of the ancient city and see even more bits and pieces of history!

Getting There

By Plane

Most people who visit Rhodes get there by flying into the Diagoras International Airport. This airport is sixteen kilometers southwest of Rhodes City. Although the airport is small with only one terminal and thirteen service desks and eight gates, this is not the easiest airport in the world to stay in. Seating is light and uncomfortable and there are very little shops and boutiques to spend time in. When you land and are ready to head out and explore Rhodes, there may be a few taxis outside or there is plenty of public transportation available as the airport has thirty scheduled stops at the location every day.

By Ferry

If you want to visit Rhodes from another one of the beautiful islands in the Dodecanese Islands, there are plenty of ferries available that travel between islands. Make sure before you board however that you are aware of how long the ferry rides can be as some of them take as long as sixteen hours.

Getting Around

You can move around Rhodes fairly easily no matter where you want to go or what you want to do.

Public Transportation

If you are in the City of Rhodes and want to travel to other parts of the island, there are several public buses that can take you to Agios Stefanos Hill and Rodini. From here you can connect to another bus to take you to many other areas as well.

By Car/Taxi

If you wish instead to travel by car, there are many car rental agencies in just about any city you want to go to in Rhodes and there are also many taxis. When travelling by taxi, remember that the drivers are not always fair in their rate and that they often have deals with hotels for recommending or calling that particular company. Also remember if you are driving on your own that the streets in Rhodes are maintained fairly well but the further south you go, the harder the roads will be to drive. And if you’re really adventurous, you can also rent a number of motorbikes, a beautiful way to see the countryside!
