Just off the East coast of Spain is an Archipelago known as the Balearic Islands. The largest of the five Balearic Islands, Mallorca has a population of almost 800,000 people occupying 2262 square miles of land which has undergone a huge change since its recognition as a holiday destination in the 1950s.

While Mallorca's capital city 'Palma de Mallorca' was the first to being growing and adopting the tourist industry as what was driving the economy, the rest of Mallorca was also slowly adapting. While it is unfortunate that the traditions of Mallorca 60 years ago have somewhat faded, a new culture has emerged and it is one that is entirely focused on enjoying the island and what it has to offer.

Since its first inhabitants arrived on the island in the Paleolithic times, the people of Mallorca have enjoyed the diversity which the island has to offer. From the mountainous regions of the north, to the flat beaches of the south and the inland cities in between, Mallorca is an island which is full of life all year round. Not only this, but Mallorca also has a rich history, including tales of 13th Century army invasions and the war of the Spanish succession. This welcoming culture, intriguing history and diversity of geographical structure only adds to the attraction of Mallorca and explains just why there are well over 20 million visitors to this Balearic Island every year.

Areas

Serra de Tramuntana

This mountainous region in northern Mallorca is the only part of the island that sees snow, and that is only due to its incredibly top height of 1445 meters above sea level. Taking a hiking tour of these mountains will give you a superb view over the rest of the island.

Migjorn

This area of southern Mallorca is the ideal place for those looking to relax in the sun. With a host of top class hotels all situated right by the coast, and the cosmopolitan capital city of Palma de Mallorca encompassing almost half the population of Mallorca, it would be impossible not to have an incredible holiday here.

Llevant

The East Coast of Majorca is an area not to be missed. The town of Cala d'Or holds an annual jazz festival right by the beaches and there is plenty of Spanish architecture to see in the East, such as the thirteenth century San Salvador church in Artá.

While temperatures in Mallorca never fall below zero, which means that visits outside of the summer months are still pleasurable, rainfall increases between October to November. The best months to visit are early summer (between late May and early July) so that you still catch the typical Mediterranean sun, but avoid the crowds.

Getting There

By Plane

The main airport of Mallorca is the Son Sant Joan located a few miles east of the capital city of Palma de Mallorca and this is the most direct way to travel. Flights leave and arrive at the main European airports very regularly as this is a top tourist destination and it's certainly possible to get a discount flight here. From the airport simply hire a car, catch a bus or take a taxi to your accommodation, depending on how far away from Palma it is.

By Boat

If you are driving through France and Spain to get to Mallorca then you can simply board a ferry to take you to the island, usually leaving from Valencia, Denia Alicante or Barcelona. If you're doing a trip of the Balearic Islands then there are several ferries leaving from Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza too.

Getting Around

By Car

As standard for such a popular holiday destination, there are lots of car rental companies offering services in Mallorca. NOTE: If you're traveling at a peak time (any time between June and August) then you should ring up prior to your arrival and book your car hire.

By Bus

There are buses in all the major cities and towns of Mallorca, especially in Palma. This is probably the best way to travel if you're staying in the Southern part of the Island and don't wish to drive.

By Train

While this is a fantastic, cheap, green and comfortable way to travel, the train only takes passengers around northern Mallorca. Stops include Manacor in the north-east, Sant Joan, Sineu, Llubi, Inca, Muro and Sa Pobla in the mid-north and Soller and Palma further towards the north-west.

Sights & Activities

Es Trenc & Ses Covetes Beaches

Anyone traveling to Mallorca is probably a keen lover of beaches and of course, will want to know where the best ones are. Es Trenc and Ses Covetes are stunning coastal resorts on the Southern coast of Mallorca, boasting miles of soft sand, dunes and warm sparkling waves.

Golfing

If you're a keen golfer then you'll be spoilt for choice in Mallorca. Choose from around 17 different locations all with several courses and added family entertainment during the summer, for example open air music concerts at 'Bendinat'.

Psicobloc

This simply means rock climbing above deep water. Mallorca has become a first choice for keen climbers due to its geological structure (the land juts out above the sea and comes in closer to water level) and there's no reason why you shouldn't give this a try if you haven't before.

Hiking

Mallorca has a stereotype as a destination offering sandy beaches and sun, with not much else. As you know, Northern Mallorca is a fairly mountainous area and this has prompted hiking tours to pop up all over Serra de Tramuntana, so there's just as much activity to be done in Mallorca as any other destination!

Bellver Castle

Located just outside of the capital city Palma, this circular hilltop castle once used as a prison is a must for those who enjoy history or just an interesting day out.
